Mountain Khakis Review

This spring Mountain Khakis released the newest addition to their synthetic line, the Equatorial pant, short and shirt.  I have three pairs of MKs first synthetic bottom, the Granite Creek pant, in shorts and pants.  Any given time of the year you would find me in my Granite Creeks, but now that the Equatorial Pant has arrived I think I have found my go to warm weather pant.

I spend much of my time in the mountains and in that time I am either wrangling my 17 month old, finding and cleaning new projects or taking photos.  Summer is the hardest time for me to figure out the best thing to wear especially here in Japan.  When I am playing with Gavin we are running around sweating and getting dirty.  Finding and cleaning new boulders is just as hot but messier.  Standing around taking photos usually requires pants because of the bugs, not to mention needing knee protection while rappelling in for the best angle to shoot from.  I had grown very fond of my Granite Creek pants but have always wished that they were a little bit lighter weight.  Well the Equatorial pant is just that.

The EP is much lighter than the Granite Creek Pant weighing in at 3.7ozs vs. 6.3ozs.  Much like the rest of the MK line the EP has duel right pockets, a gusseted crouch, articulated knees and reinforced stitching.  These pants do add a few more novel features that are wonderful additions to an already great pant.  Two of the six pockets have added zippers to keep small important items right where you felt them while adventuring.  The adjustable snap cuffs are great when a high heal hook on your newest climbing en devour is called for.  These pants are also covered in a 80/20 DWR, Durable Water Repellant.  80/20 meaning that after 20 washes there will still be 80% of the DWR felt!

In the last month a half that I have worn these pants I have taken them in the mountains of Japan, the deep south of Alabama and Tennessee, parting in New Orleans, and on several shoots in and around Tokyo.  The look of these pants is quite clean and professional, but still technical enough for a weekend trip bouldering or climbing during warm and cool months.  My only draw back is that I have one pair of them.  I absolutely will be purchasing another pair this year.  I will keep everyone updated how these pants hold up.  I promise to put them through the ringer!!!!!
