The Little Things

As photographers we are always at attention for things that catch our eye.  Trying to be elite to the point of solitary outings of secrecy to capture “THE” photo.  Driving hours and hours to a festival that might develop into a good image or moment worth capturing.  The true is that these moments are everywhere all the time.  Yes, going to a special matsuri will give you more opportunities, but just walking down the street from your house can produce these types of moments jus the same.

Any day now, my wife is due with our second child and my mother is here visiting and helping us during the first three months or so.  While she is here, we want to take her out and see the Japanese culture that is at our doorstep.  As I was walking out the door I grabbed my camera at the last minute.  I was just thinking that it would be nice to grab a few shots of my son and his grand mother.  We walked right past a temple that I see all the time.  The light was very nice and while my son and mother were turning around I noticed something that I had not before.  On the temple wall there was a feature that jumped out at me.  I had seen these faces dozens of times, but for some reason this time it was different.  I framed it up and again proved to myself that one, I should always bring my camera with me and two, that beauty is everywhere.  While I am not saying that this image is AMAZING or award winning, it is beautiful.

It is matsuri season here in Japan, so stay tuned for many more posts detailing my concrete adventures in the coming weeks!
